The Eight Steps of Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy Dentist in Burlington ON Area

Guided Biofilm Therapy is a process which utilizes eight specific steps for the removal of plaque for cleaner teeth. At Mount Royal Dental in Burlington, Ontario, Dr. Sam Gupta performs guided biofilm therapy for patients seeking gentle teeth cleaning. In the past, traditional biofilm management involved brushes, rubber cups, and harsh pastes. Thanks to the continuous advancement in dental technologies, this modern eight-step process utilizes techniques which are more thorough, efficient, and less abrasive to the tooth.

  1. Assess: The Guided Biofilm Therapy starts with a dental exam, during which cavity and gum disease detection will be conducted. Cleaning then begins by rinsing your mouth using a professional grade mouthwash
  2. Disclose: EMS Biofilm Disclosing agent will be used to make biofilm/plaque fully visible. The substance is purple tinted so that when it adheres to areas of existing biofilm, it will be easy to identify for plaque removal
  3. Motivate: Your dental team will help you identify areas you are missing when brushing and flossing so that future plaque and tartar build-up can be minimized. You may also be advised to use interdental brushes or air flossers for more effective flossing
  4. Airflow: A powder and air polisher will now be used to eradicate any built-up plaque on the surface of your teeth and surrounding soft tissue. This powder will also aid in the removal of stains and discoloration. This is safe for both natural teeth and replacements such as a dental implant
  5. Perioflow: Using a special nozzle, a special powder combines with water and exits the nozzle as a stream aimed at cleaning gum tissue and interdental spaces for thorough cleaning of the deep pockets in your gums
  6. Piezon PS: The final step in the physical treatment, Piezon scaling, is used for a 95% efficient removal of tartar. It is a pain-free method of scaling which prevents damage to implants, crowns, and other restorations
  7. Check: A thorough check will now be performed to ensure that all plaque and tartar have been removed and all dental cavities properly diagnosed before a protective fluoride gel is applied
  8. Recall: This final step involves the education of why the dental patient should come back for routine dental visits. Your dental team will ensure that your mouth is happy and healthy while making sure you are pleased with how the treatment went
