Are you afraid of going to the dentist? You are not alone. Thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life have dental anxiety. It keeps these individuals from receiving routine preventive care to keep their mouths and bodies healthy, and vital treatments when problems inevitably arise. Mount Royal Dental offers gentle sedation solutions to let you get the care you need, without apprehension.
Nitrous oxide
“Laughing gas” is a good choice to take the edge off of mild dental anxiety, an active gag reflex, or concern about numbing injections. You inhale gas through a mask over the nose, for immediate relaxation. The effect wears off as soon as the flow of gas is stopped, so you may drive or return to work. Nitrous oxide is safe for children, too.
Oral sedative
Oral sedation is delivered in pill form. You take one the night before your appointment to rest well, and another shortly before you visit our office. You are conscious during treatment, but relaxed and unconcerned. The medication has a slight amnesic property, so your appointment passes quickly and you have little memory of the procedure. Oral sedation causes grogginess, so you must have someone drive you.
IV sedation
This medication is administered intravenously to induce a state of emotional and physical relaxation, yet you remain responsive to verbal prompts. If your dental anxiety is severe or you are quite concerned with the intravenous aspect, we may prescribe an oral sedative to take before your visit. Time seems to pass quickly with IV sedation, and you won’t remember much about the treatment. Again, you do need a driver for this type of “sleep dentistry.”
Deep sedation
We can arrange for deep sedation, on request, at an off-site operatory. This option is usually used for complex procedure on children.
You are in good hands before, during, and after your visit. We review sedation instructions with you, both in the office and by telephone. Throughout your appointment, your wellbeing is medically supervised – pulse and oxygen levels are monitored, and you are not left alone.
Even if you haven’t been to the dentist for a long time, you can get your oral health back on track, with sedation dentistry at Mount Royal Dental.
