At Mount Royal Dental, we are dedicated to helping Burlington ON area patients with a wide range of dental concerns. This includes tooth replacement. There are many options available to patients today when they want to repair the smile after tooth loss or extraction, including:
Our practice offers all these solutions, but strongly encourages patients who are faced with complete tooth loss to consider the advantages of moving forward with all-on-4 implants and dentures.
First, even for all-on-4 dentures, dental implants must be placed. Implants are placed along the dental arch and act as the foundation for the dentures that are to later be placed. Dental implants are fabricated from titanium and are biocompatible with the body. These posts are small, but powerful. They can be placed into the bone of the jaw, stimulate the process of osseointegration, and solidify themselves in place to function as a tooth root replacement. While many patients use dental implants as stand-alone replacements for a single tooth, they can also be used to hold a denture.
With the use of dental implants as the foundation, patients can combine these implants with dentures called all-on-4 dentures. These dentures are conservative and extremely natural looking. They are considered the ultimate option for our patients because they use the implants to hold them in place – ensuring that they do not shift or fall out during a day. This also gives them the stability necessary for patients to enjoy all their favorite foods without worry. All-on-4 dentures are permanent, long-lasting, and a great solution for patients worried about traditional full dentures.
The entire process of obtaining all-on-4 dentures takes some time, but the results are phenomenal. The dentists at Mount Royal Dental work together with patients to help them see the advantages of this treatment and guide them through the entire process from start to finish.
The first step involves assessment. Not everyone is a proper candidate for all-on-4 dentures. We evaluate the patient and have them undergo a series of x-rays to check the bone health and determine if the jaw can successfully hold the implants in place. Then, placement is considered. It is important to find areas where the implants can be surgically placed without affecting other areas of the mouth and body, such as the sinuses. Once it has been determined that patients can move forward with treatment, oral surgery is scheduled.
Oral surgery is done with proper local anesthetics and sedation. Patients rest while the implants are put into the bone of the jaw during the procedure. Then, the area is sutured, and patients are given aftercare instructions. It is important to allow time for the process of osseointegration to occur. Osseointegration involves bone growth that wraps around the implants and gives them the strength they need to function as a foundation for the new dentures. Patients visit their dentist regularly to monitor this process. Once the implants are firmly in place, the all-on-4 dentures are fabricated and placed. The dentures “snap” into the dental implants for optimum stability.
For patients who are not considered appropriate candidates for all-on-4s, the team at Mount Royal Dental will assess the individual for other options that are also available at our practice. Traditional dentures are often economical and appropriate for most patients, while others who are seeking a more permanent option may think about the possibility of using a dental bridge. Dental bridges can replace one or more teeth in a row and utilize the existing teeth as anchors for the restoration. Bridges are viable options for patients who do not have enough bone to support implants.
