Mount Royal Dental is a high-tech dentist’s office in Burlington, Ontario. What does that mean for you? It means that our knowledgeable, non-judgmental, and skilled team, led by Dr. Sam Gupta, is supported in their mission of providing quality, fear-free dentistry with advanced tools. These technological investments promote the most conservative, non-invasive, painless, and precise treatment outcomes and patient experience possible.
CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) represents one of many dental technologies available at our well-appointed practice. It is an invaluable tool to “see” the teeth and surrounding tissues in 3-dimensions; however, it is particularly beneficial when planning implant surgeries.
Implants have a high rate of success and patient satisfaction. Implant failures are generally characterized as “early” or “late.” Early implant failures arise when the implant fails to heal and “osseointegrate” to the surrounding bone once positioned in the jaw. These failures can be avoided with the expertise of experienced practitioners like Dr. Gupta and sophisticated technologies like CBCT. Together, these capabilities assure that implants are optimally and predictably placed. Dr. Gupta also ensures that implants “make the most” of the available bone. In fact, it is the strategic placement of implants that allows for us to apply a minimal number of implants to support a maximum number of replacement teeth! Generally, as few as four implants are all that is needed to stabilize all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
Now, late implant failures are a different ballgame. Instead of a “high-tech” approach, we use a “high-touch” method, working with patients to ensure that they use the best techniques and products to keep their new teeth healthy and looking great. After all, the area around the implant can develop a gum disease-like inflammation called peri-implantitis. This potentially dangerous condition can be avoided with good oral hygiene (home and professional care).
Dentists and patients alike love this scanning technology. For starters, the CBCT scanner is designed to capture multiple images of the oral cavity and maxillofacial structures (jaws) from different angles in just seconds. This type of equipment features a rotating arm that non-invasively goes around the patient a full 360 degrees. Using this technology informs better and safer treatment and more comfortable diagnostics; with such a high volume of crisp and detailed images, we are able to anticipate and address complications, such as anatomical abnormalities. This approach increases the odds of successful treatment and uneventful healing and minimizes the risk of pain and other side effects, such as a prolonged recovery and nerve damage.
