What are crowns?
Crowns, which some patients refer to as “caps,” are restorations that are fabricated from porcelain, zirconia, or gold to cover the natural structure of a tooth. Crowns are meant to improve the appearance of a tooth or to add an extra layer of strength and protection to a tooth that has been weakened. Our practice offers dental crowns for patients who are interested in keeping their smile looking beautiful and ensuring the tooth is strong enough to withstand natural chewing and biting forces without breaking the tooth.
What are bridges?
Bridges are fixed restorations that include dental crowns on each end, fused to a false tooth called a pontic. Bridges use the adjacent teeth to support the restoration and replace missing teeth in-between. These restorations can also be made with many materials including gold, porcelain, and zirconia. Dental bridges are a permanent option for tooth replacement but are less expensive than alternatives such as dental implants. They are a step up from using partial dentures for missing teeth.

What is the process for creating crowns and bridges?
The process is similar for both crowns and bridges at Mount Royal Dental. We start with a consultation appointment with our dentist to determine if crowns and bridges are the best solution for a patient. Our team may suggest alternatives and give patients the information they need to make a knowledgeable choice as to how to proceed. Then, preparations are made. The tooth that will be covered with the crown (for a bridge as well) is prepared with the removal of a substantial amount of tooth structure. Then, molds are taken and are sent to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of the restoration. This can take approximately one week. However, upon request, we may use our CEREC machine to fabricate a same-day restoration out of porcelain right in our office within 20 minutes. Once the restoration is completed, the patient will have it bonded onto their tooth and will enjoy their fully restored smile!
Who is a candidate for crowns and bridges?
Most patients can benefit from restorations such as crowns and bridges to repair the function and beauty of their smiles. We do encourage patients to come in for an evaluation and learn about other options that may be available to them. We also educate patients on the benefits of each type of material used to fabricate these repairs. We encourage patients to ask questions during their appointment, so they are fully informed in regard to what to expect.
