Mount Royal Dental in Burlington, ON, is a full-service dentistry office that believes our practice is a great place for kids to begin a lifetime of good oral health. Our team is committed to delivering top notch dental care for kids in a positive, fun environment. We take the time to build trust with all our younger patients and work with parents on preventative hygiene education, so they can give their kids the tools they need for health teeth and gums. We have worked hard to cultivate a creative, fun, and child–friendly environment where patients of all ages feel at home.
Some of the dental care services we provide for kids include:
It is just as important for kids to have regular dental exams as it is for parents. Preventative dental care is crucial in avoiding extensive dental care in the future. Establishing a good oral hygiene routine early sets a foundation for life-long oral health.
We recommend children come to our office for their first check-up by their first birthday or whenever their first few teeth begin to emerge. These early visits allow your child to establish a comfort level with our dental team, and they let the dental team examine the mouth to identify potential oral health problems.
You should bring your child to the dentist twice yearly for an exam and cleaning. When you keep your child on a routine schedule of check-ups it makes it easier for us to identify potential problems early when treatment can be more conservative.
During your child’s visit we always perform a dental cleaning to remove any tartar or plaque that has become trapped along the teeth or gum line. This helps prevent future tooth decay. During the exam, we will check the teeth and gums, looking to identify any problems such as cavities. If there are any issues identified, we recommend treatment as necessary.
While no one wants to hear their child has a cavity, they are a common occurrence among children and if they are caught early, treatment can be simple and straightforward.
It’s important to treat all cavities, even those in baby teeth, as untreated tooth decay can progress and cause nerve damage. which can be very painful for your child. We always aim to treat decay in baby teeth rather than removing the tooth since primary teeth act as a placeholder for permanent teeth.
The process of placing a filling in kids’ teeth is very similar to placing a filling in adult teeth. The dentist will remove the decay from the tooth and clean it out before placing the filling.
In some cases, patients may need more than a filling. Perhaps the cavity is too large to receive a filling, or there may have been injury to the tooth that has caused it to crack or break. In these cases, we can offer more substantial restorations such as dental crowns.
The goal of restorative dental care for both kids and adults is to preserve the tooth so that it doesn’t need to be removed. Even if damage has occurred to a baby tooth, it’s important to consider the restorative options. Baby teeth are important to the development of speech, the alignment of permanent teeth, and they aid in proper chewing and digestion. If a baby tooth has become impaired, we always try to save it rather than remove it whenever possible.
Dental crowns are caps that fit over the entire visible surface area of the tooth. They are often made of porcelain which is a strong, tooth colored material that is durable. The process for placing a crown involves removing any decay and some of the enamel to allow room for the crown. The crown is then cemented into place to restore and strengthen the tooth structure.
By establishing a routine of regular dental care for your child, you allow them to develop a healthy relationship with the dentist and understand that visiting our office isn’t a negative or scary thing.
