Let’s be honest, breaking or damaging a tooth is not on your “to-do” list. Unfortunately, dental trauma happens. When it does, you want to remember that you can resort your smile quickly and easily. At Mount Royal Dental, our dentists provide tooth crown services for patients in Burlington. The dental crown procedure is performed to strengthen and restore broken, damaged, or decayed teeth to improve your smile.
A dental crown is a cap that covers a tooth to protect it. A crown may be used to restore a broken, chipped, or badly decayed tooth. When a tooth is seriously damaged or decayed, the cavity may be too large for a standard filling. Once the damaged section is removed, the tooth may be too fragile on its own. The crown covers the natural tooth keeping it strong and protecting it from further damage. Additionally, a dental crown can cover a tooth after a root canal or a dental implant.
Dental crowns may be porcelain fused to metal, ceramic, zirconia, stainless steel, or gold. With an on-site CEREC milling machine, we also offer same-day tooth crown services. Our dentists will help you determine the most appropriate crown material based on the tooth’s location and budget.
The dental crown process depends on whether you need a temporary crown, traditional laboratory crown, or same-day crown. Getting a conventional crown requires the following steps:
For same-day crowns, there is no need for a temporary crown or second visit. The tooth is examined and prepped in the same manner. However, digital impressions and an on-site milling machine are used to create the crown while you wait. Your dentist can adjust the settings for colour, shape, and size to ensure a close match to your adjacent teeth. Your crown is created and placed during your initial dental appointment.
Whether you get a traditional or same-day crown, the aftercare process is the same. Good oral health habits help prolong the life of your crown. Brush your teeth at least twice daily. If your teeth are sensitive, consider switching to a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Floss daily to remove any food particles that may be stuck in your teeth. Avoid biting down on hard candies, foods, or ice as it could damage your crown.
